Tomie dePaola contest

Today I saw several people posting on twitter about the Tomie dePaola contest for SCBWI. I became a member of SCBWI earlier this year but have never submitted to contests or been to a conference. Normally I wouldn't participate because I think my art still has so far to go, I need more illustration experience, everyone will say you suck, blah blah blah....but today I just went for it. I didn't find out about the contest til after 7pm and needed to submit by midnight PST so I was cutting it close.

The prompt was to make an illustration for the poem "a sneeze is a breeze in your nose". So I came up with several ideas, made dinner, put the kids to bed then started sketching the idea I settled on. At this point it's late but I have nothing to lose and I still feel like drawing. I think, sure..I can make it in time, no problem. I did make it on time- just barely. I let me eyes rest a few minutes after submitting the email, then went back to look at my illustration. I thought hmm it's not that bad for a last minute drawing..but you know what happens when you're really tired and you get the brilliant idea to try out for a drawing contest at the last minute...you forget that normally people have TWO ARMS! How in the world did I miss that?! *head to desk* Maybe he would've covered his mouth if he had another arm and hand. Yea so I'm off to bed now..here it is... enjoy my 4 fingered one armed people.

  1. I think, I wouldn't have even noticed... I like the colors, the girl's expression, and how her piggy tails are flying behind her head.

    1. Thanks nj :) someone else said the same thing- that they wouldn't have noticed the missing arms if I hadn't pointed it out. I still want to go back this week and add the other arms in. I like all the portrait drawings you're doing!
