tribute to Dr. Seuss

To celebrate the upcoming birthday of Dr. Seuss, I decided to draw a tribute piece. I tried to get as close as I could to the style without spending too much time on it. What do you think?

Monsters vs kittens sketch

I didn't find out about the Dani Draws monsters vs kittens contest until late, so unfortunately I missed the deadline. This sketch is one of the ideas I had...monsters like chocolate, kittens do not. The arms on this sketch are way off partly because I was toying with the idea of multiple pairs of arms and also I blame the tv for distracting me ;)

digital drawing- Rat

I started working on this last night. This is taking me a lot longer than I thought and is a work in progress. It started off as a simple sketch and I never intended to get as detailed as this. I still need to add more fur, start working on the back ear, feet and tail. The feet are proving to be more difficult than I thought they'd be.

If you ever need to paint fur in photoshop and can't find a decent free fur/hair brush set- the photoshop dune grass brush works great with a little tweaking.

Late night sketchin'

Mr. Owl- clearly not amused..at all. There's a story coming with this little guy

yeti twitter icon

I finally joined twitter! I have no idea what I'm doing or how to use it but I'm all signed up and following some great artists. I feel like I need to read a twitter for dummies book now :)

Here is the little icon I created today to use on twitter- it's based on one of the goofy yeti's I drew at the bottom of my sketchbook page.

illustration friday- wool

For some reason I was thinking I had another day left before the Illustration Friday deadline but nope..it's Friday already and my drawing has stayed in the same sad state I left it in. This is far from how I wanted it to look but the basic idea is there.

digital sketch #7- happy dino

I'm still trying to get the hang of coloring and using the brushes in photoshop along with the wacom tablet. This was my practice for tonight. Hope you like it!

sculpey lamb inspired by Renée Kurilla

This week while trying to work on my Illustration Friday idea, I got really frustrated with my drawing and decided to take a break and do some sculpey instead. Most of the time when I make sculpey it's a snowman ornament for a friend or family member but yesterday I decided to try something different. While visiting one of my favorite artists blogs, Renée Kurilla, I was reminded again how much I love her Mary Had a Little Lamb series and was inspired to try to make one of the characters. I probably didn't do her artwork justice but here's my attempt at making Mary's little lamb :)

Here's a side shot from before I baked it and added gloss paint to the eyes, rain hat and boots.

Eventually I'd like to try making the Mary character too but I've only made maybe 4-5 sculpey people so that would be a pretty big challenge.

If you've never seen Renée's work, you should definitely check out her website and blog!

sketchbook week 5?

I've lost track of how many weeks it's been since I started drawing again- I think maybe around 5 weeks. Last week I didn't hold up my commitment of drawing in my sketchbook everyday but my excuse is I was working on web design stuff which is important since my website has been (and still is) under construction since I don't know when.

This week the illustration Friday topic is wool so I've been busy today drawing sheep along with a little old lady knitting a sweater (or something) from some multi-colored sheep that are not yet colored in my sketch. I also drew a hippie sheep-I have no idea why :) Oh and the weird yeti creature in the top left corner- that was from the other day - he was the lone yeti on the next page of my yeti sketches. I don't know that I've ever tried to draw a sheep before now so I'm hoping my sketches of them get better thru the week.

Illustration Friday- Storm

This week's topic was storm. I started early in the week by sketching an idea and thought I'd give myself plenty of time...but after the intial sketch, I got busy with other work and forgot all about it. I'm not completely happy with the final outcome since I didn't completely finish my idea but I'm happy I at least got something done to submit.

Sketchbook yeti

Started working on my illustration Friday idea. This week the topic is storm. I was originally planning to have a yeti catching snowflakes on his tongue or making snow angels but we'll see how it turns out. Right now I'm sketching til I have a better idea how it should look.

I think I've been watching too much kick buttowski because the last yeti has a slight resemblance to Gunther

Update: added the remaining yeti sketches

digital sketch #4

Today I tried to do a sketch from another book idea I have. I'm not completely satisfied with how it turned out so far but I'm having a lot of fun learning as I go along. This one was done in Illustrator then I added a little shading in Photoshop. The tree is really bugging me since I didn't intend for it to stay this way...I just sort of scribbled it there as a place holder but then I forgot to redo it.

Here's my once a week digital sketch. Still lots to learn but having fun :)
