learning how to paint in PS

trying out some sketching/coloring techniques in PhotoShop. Here's the my 2nd quick digital sketch of the day, hope you like it.

digital sketch

This weeks digital sketch was done in Illustrator. I was trying to give it an old school children's book style with keeping the lines simple and not much detail.

Candy cane Jane & gum drop joe

If you have kids, you may have heard of the Laurie Berkner Band. These characters are from a song of theirs called candy cane Jane. I'm not embarrassed to admit I've listened to the entire CD more times than my kids have. I find most kid songs are really annoying...not sure if hearing the band over and over on nick jr finally broke me down or what, but I enjoy them nonetheless :) Anyways..every time I hear that one song, I always picture it as a book and imagine the characters and the pages of a book turning as the song plays. These are only rough sketches but kinda what I picture in my head. I would like to work with the sketches a little more and eventually color in PS.

quick sketches

Not feeling well but trying to get some sketching done even if they aren't great. Excuse the bad lighting in the pics but I'm not moving off the sofa unless I have to...taking care of 2 kids while sick has zapped my energy :)

digital sketch

After visiting my friends blog- Casey G, I was inspired to try a different kind of sketch today. Casey is an illustrator and has a lot of other illustrators draw octo-puss in boots and she posts it on her blog. Although I'm not an illustrator myself, I decided to give it a try. This took me a lot longer than I planned since I tried to do it in photoshop and add color using different brushes/settings...all which I have very little experience with. I didn't get the legs or shading quite right but decided I'd worked on it long enough. I'm going to try to do some digital sketches at least once a week so I can get used to the brushes and adding color- hopefully I'll learn a thing or two. Here's my version of octo-puss in boots. You can visit Casey's blog to see different versions of this character and a lot of other great illustrations and sculpey work done by Casey.

iPad drawing/painting

Trying out some painting on the iPad using the art rage app. I've had this app forever but never make time to use it. I like the app so far but didn't figure much out with it tonight. Since I haven't painted with real paint and canvas it's nice to experiment a bit with brushes and be able to undo and add layers. Here's my goofy painting so far :)

Children's book sketch

This is a quick sketch for a children's book idea I have. I've revamped my idea so many times - maybe this will be the year I actually settle with it and get something done.

Today's quick sketches

Quick sketches & scribbles with marker

These are sketches from a few days ago. Normally I wouldn't post these because they aren't very good ..but I figure I have to start somewhere and at least I'm trying right? :) Picking up drawing again (outside of illustrator) after years of not drawing, isn't exactly like riding a bike...more like you use it or lose it.

Sketchbook

I wish I could say I'm an artist that carries a sketchbook with me everywhere and draws every chance I get but I'm not..well not yet anyways :) Hopefully one day I'll have a shelf full of completed sketchbooks but for now I'll take baby steps at getting back into it and try to have fun drawing and learning. Here is my first sketch and first time drawing a tree from nature that I can remember- it turned out a lot better than I thought it would, though some of u may laugh at my attempt ;)
